Alpha Socialization VS. Beta Socialization
Dominant or "Alpha" Socialization
Dominance is a tendency on the part of the dog to assume control or supremacy in social interactions and relationships. Dominance is most clearly expressed when a dog wins competitions for limited resources such as food and water. In most cases, a dominant dog will strive to achieve rank in a pack or social group. To work effectively with a highly dominant the owner or trainer must gain the initiative in the relationship. However, this is not done simply by "showing the dog who is boss". Attempts to physically punish a dominant dog into cooperative behavior normally results in owner aggression, and dog and owner becoming afraid of one another.Sub dominant or "Beta" Socialization
Submissiveness is a tendency on the part of the dog to allow other dogs or people to assume control or supremacy. Submissiveness is expressed when a dog avoids or loses competitions for limited resources. A sub dominant dog is driven to behave in a subservient way that will establish its belonging in the pack. These responses are called "submissive behavior". However, keep in mind that a dog's social rank or dominance with respect to its owners is not an index to its quality. A submissive dog will ofter exhibit what is called willingness or eagerness to please. This behavior can greatly facilitate the dogs training if the owner has established a positive bond with the animal.
